Julian Opie Portland Stone frieze
CitizenM Hotel, Tower of London
The first time we worked with Julian Opie was on an artwork for the designer hotel in London.
This was produced in Jordan’s Basebed Portland Stone and patinated bronze in a similar technique to Rona Smith’s “An Age, An Instant” off Regent Street.
The Portland Stone was routed and the outline figures cut from 5mm bronze sheet on the water jet cutting machines and then patinated and glued into place on site.
The company also produced plastic templates for each figure. These were used to ensure the accuracy of the stone installation was maintained to allow the bronze figures to be fitted perfectly into the recess in the carved stone.
The walls were 18m and 8m long respectively and 2.4m high, and consisted of 23 figures.
